The following is a suggested script for a typical broomball practice
that any GTBL coach might want to follow. Please feel free to use any or all of this
practice script for your own broomball practices.
Team Skills:
Form Run
Stretching
Quick Hands / Dribbling:
Each player dribbling a broomball ball against a nearby wall, as
quickly as possible.
Scoops:
This is done for height and distance
Passes:
[3 areas of emphasis: 1) soft reception / control of ball off
of broom, 2) quick relay pass, 3) accurate pass, just in front of intended receiver.]
Mobile: 2 Lines [2 players slide on parallel course and pass back and forth]
3 Lines [3 player weave]
Drives / Relay Race, 2 Lines:
Straight: down and back [maintaining broom contact with ball the
entire way]
Cones: down and back while weaving through the cones [maintaining
broom contact with ball the entire way
Individual Skills:
Offensive Forwards:
Stop & Pop [Center passes ball to Forward who first stops the
ball and then quickly pops it into the net]
Back Door [Center passes the ball to nearside forward, who then
passes the ball across the face of the net to the backside forward.]
Hand Ball [At first have the ball hand tossed to backside forward,
later have the ball scooped by an offensive wing to the backside forward. In both cases
the forward uses her fisted broom handle to knock the ball out of the air and into the
net.]
Offensive Wings:
"Cannon" [Wings take turns passing to each other and
unloading a massive "hit/shot on net" on the passed ball.]
"Fleck" [Wings take turns passing to each other and making
a low scoop shot on the net]
Scoop to the Back Door [work with forwards]
Center:
"Fleck" [try to hit upper corners of net with low scoops
from 10 to 15 feet in front of net]
"Scoop" [try to hit targets, work on accuracy]
Back Door [work with forwards]
Stop & Pop [work with forwards]
Defensive Wings / Mad Dog:
Scoops [3 areas of emphasis: 1) "funnel" from defensive
zone, up the middle towards the net area, 2) "corner" from defensive zone into
the offensive corners, away from the net, 3) try to hit specific targets or offensive
players/areas.]
making passes off of the wall to clear the defensive zone [practice
banking the ball off the wall, around the opposition.]
"Walk Through" / Working Game Situations:
With the ball in hand, held high overhead, walk about practice court
and have players react to changing position of the ball. Players should be able to explain
why they did, what they did, in response to each movement of the ball.
1/2 Court Scrimmage:
5 on 5 [Defense has no Center]
if you pull extra players into your offensive zone then practice 7 on
5.
5 on 4 [Defense has no Center or Goalie Guard in order to increase
offensive passing lanes and encourage offensive team play]
Defensive keys to watch
Defensive pressure always on ball from right people.
proper Defensive positioning on backside of Defensive zone.
no Defensive passing through red zone, across front of net.
3/4 Court Scrimmage:
coach is the only player allowed in the far 1/4 court
coach fetches ball that defense clears from their zone and then
either:
passes to any open offensive player.
scoops to soft spots in offensive zone.
power hits for transitional goals [to see if your defense can defend
against the quick, hard, long distance shot on net.
